Look for recognized trade certification (Red Seal in Canada, ASE in the U.S.), online reviews above 4.0, transparent pricing, and willingness to show you the problem. A good mechanic will explain what's wrong and why the repair is needed.

Independent mechanics are typically 30-50% cheaper than dealerships for the same work. Dealerships may be better for warranty work or recalls. For routine maintenance and common repairs, an independent shop is usually the better value.

Follow your owner's manual schedule. Generally: oil change every 5,000-8,000 km (3,000-5,000 miles), tire rotation every 10,000 km (6,000 miles), brake inspection annually, and a full inspection before winter. Modern cars need less frequent service than older models.
